LAFAYETTE, Ind. (Oct. 6, 2026) — The Wea Township Fire Department is spending this week visiting local elementary schools as part of Fire Prevention Week, bringing fire safety lessons directly to students at Mayflower Mill Elementary, Wea Ridge Elementary, and Woodland Elementary.
Firefighters are talking with students about what firefighters do and how they help the community. They are also covering when to call 911 and what steps to take if a fire breaks out at home.
A big part of the lessons focuses on home fire safety. Firefighters are teaching kids to pick a family meeting place outside the home and to "close before you doze" — shutting bedroom doors at night to slow the spread of fire and smoke.
What Families Can Do
Parents can use this week as a chance to talk with their kids about the same lessons at home. A few simple steps:
- Pick a meeting spot outside the home where everyone gathers after getting out.
- Close bedroom doors at night. A closed door can slow fire and smoke.
- Know when to call 911 and make sure kids know how.
- Practice a home fire escape plan together.
Wea Fire encourages families to ask their kids what they learned at school this week and to build these habits together at home.
The Wea Township Fire Department is a combination career and volunteer department that has served Wea Township since 1969.
