Safety starts at home

Presentation topics we bring to schools, businesses, and community groups, plus the basics every household should know.

Emergency preparedness

Make a household plan

  • Two ways out of every room, and a meeting place outside
  • Practice your escape plan twice a year, once at night
  • Keep a go-bag: meds, documents, flashlight, phone charger
  • Know how to shut off gas, water, and electricity
  • Sign up for Tippecanoe County emergency alerts
Fire prevention

Smoke alarms & escape

  • Alarms on every level, in every bedroom, outside sleeping areas
  • Test monthly, replace batteries yearly, replace units every 10 years
  • Close bedroom doors at night to slow fire and smoke spread
  • Crawl low under smoke; get out and stay out
  • Need an alarm? We'll install one free.
Fire prevention

Kitchen & heating safety

  • Stay in the kitchen when frying, grilling, or broiling
  • Keep a lid nearby to smother a pan fire; never use water on grease
  • Space heaters need three feet of clearance in every direction
  • Have chimneys and furnaces inspected annually
  • Never leave candles or open flames unattended
Severe weather

Storm-season fire hazards

  • Lightning strikes: check the attic for smoke after a nearby strike
  • Generators run outdoors only, 20 feet from windows and doors
  • Downed power lines are live until the utility says otherwise
  • Unplug appliances during outages to prevent surge fires
  • Keep flashlights, not candles, handy during outages
Fire prevention

Basement fire risks

  • Keep storage three feet away from the furnace and water heater
  • Never store gasoline or propane inside the house
  • Dryer lint traps cleaned every load, vents cleaned yearly
  • Extension cords are temporary, not permanent wiring
  • Every basement bedroom needs an egress window
Outdoor burning

Open burn basics

  • Know Indiana's open burning rules before you light anything
  • Never burn on windy days; keep water and a shovel at hand
  • Stay with the fire until it is completely out and cold
  • Call non-emergency dispatch at (765) 423-9321 with questions
  • Smoke in a neighbor's yard? They'll call it in. So will we.
